The difference between a Fade and Taper haircut

Writer: Robert OwensRobert Owens

A fade and a taper haircut are two similar but distinct styles that are commonly used in men's haircuts. Both of these styles involve gradually cutting hair shorter from the top of the head to the sides and back, but there are some key differences between the two:

Fade: A fade haircut typically involves cutting the hair very short or even shaved on the sides and back of the head, with a gradual transition to longer hair on top. The transition can be very subtle or more dramatic, depending on the desired look. Fades are often categorized by the point on the head where the transition begins (e.g., high fade, mid fade, low fade). Fades can also be combined with other styles, such as a pompadour or quiff, to create a more unique look.

Taper: A taper haircut also involves gradually cutting hair shorter from the top of the head to the sides and back, but the transition is usually more gradual and subtle than a fade. The hair is typically left longer on top and gradually tapered down to a shorter length on the sides and back. Tapers can also be categorized by the point on the head where the transition begins (e.g., high taper, mid taper, low taper).

Overall, the main difference between a fade and a taper is the degree of contrast between the longer hair on top and the shorter hair on the sides and back. A fade has a more dramatic contrast, while a taper has a more subtle one.
